19-21 August | 08:30-16:30 | TWIMS, 74 Everton Road, Kloof

Course Overview

Manufacturers are increasingly exposed to material price volatility, supply-chain disruption, and escalating end-of-life liabilities. Circular economy strategies offer a practical pathway to strengthen resilience and competitiveness by keeping materials at their highest value for longer, reducing waste, and improving local value retention. This short course provides an applied framework for integrating circularity into manufacturing strategy and operations. It introduces the three guiding principles of circularity, which are eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating nature. The course then considers strategic, practical implementation processes that help firms with the following:

  • Identify risks,
  • Select the most appropriate circular strategies,
  • Build capabilities,
  • Establish pricing and procurement approaches,
  • Measure performance and influence suppliers.

The course is grounded in the South African context, including regulatory and compliance considerations relevant to manufacturers (e.g., waste planning and reporting, municipal by-laws, and extended producer responsibility obligations), and the growing importance of premium markets that increasingly expect circular design and credible sustainability performance.

Day three is a consolidation and application day. Syndicate teams prepare a simulated board presentation outlining a circular economy intervention for a selected manufacturing site or value chain, including the business case, risk reduction logic, implementation roadmap, and measurement plan.
